Buffalo Gals are launching a new show, which will be airing for the first time on Thursday, April 5, at the Merlin Theatre in Frome. We love working with dancers, and playing for dancers, and now that we have several dancers we adore in the Buffalo Gals fold, we want to put on a bigger show with a greater emphasis on the excitement of percussive step-dance.

On April 5, we will be performing at the Merlin, and donating all proceeds to the Theatre. It’s an important part of our community, and has always given us a lot of support. Somerset Arts cuts affect the running of the Theatre, and we hope that, with a full house, we can give a good sum back to the Merlin arts programme. So, please, show up!

Three Buffalo Gals dancers will be performing that night, Jenny Read, Sibs Riesen, and Sarah Marshall–all superb flatfooters. We’ll also have talented members of Apakella Appalachian dance team joining us for displays of precision formation dance and other interesting and entertaining aspects of step-dance.

Don’t forget to look at our list of upcoming gigs if you are in the Shropshire or Herefordshire areas. We’ll be up there March 29 through April 1, accompanied by Dan Eccles and Jake Jones, two of our Stampede’s finest dancers, who will be a great enhancement to that series of performances.

Didmarton Bluegrass festival was their best ever. We loved our gig on the OGRI stage. The atmosphere was wonderful, due to the excellence of organisation, PA and lighting, and a great, enthusiastic audience. Bill Skelson let us use some of his video clips. You can see one here, Sally Anne and a couple more in the gallery.

While there, we were interviewed by BBC Radio 4 Women’s Hour, and we’re looking forward to letting you know when that show will be broadcast.

Don’t miss our Great Train Robbery show at the American Museum on the afternoon of October 16. It’s a multimedia treat for music lovers, film buffs, and trainspotters all!

Phil Davidson, the reknown luthier of Wick, had his open birthday bash last weekend. We played and gave a square dance, and it was big fun. To our delight, the guests were enthusiastic about dancing, and, when we were asked for an encore, it was specified that the encore should be a square dance. Rather unusual. Maybe some of Phil’s Vietnamese coffee was making the rounds.

Guest appearances on stage made the evening even more interesting and fun. Woody Lissauer performed for half an hour, singing some of his own songs and a few covers, none of them anachronistic enough to be known by the crowd, but nevertheless very well received. Tom Bailey did a gorgeous set of fiddle tunes. Jackie Kempton played extra dance fiddler for the square dances, with a great solid rhythm, and we had Woody and Tom in the dance band for awhile too.

It was a great crowd of people, anda pleasure to be able to entertain in honour of Phil’s day.

It was great fun to play for friends and neighbours, and the Olive Tree was packed. We haven’t played in Frome for a long time, and it felt wonderful to see and remember that we have fans in our home town. The Wednesday night music at the Olive Tree is of a high quality, and the place is becoming known as a music venue. And they seem to feature, as a real bonus, sound men who are also highly regarded musicians. Such luxury!

Songwriter Woody Lissauer, brother of BGs fiddler Kate, played there this past Wednesday, and we had another great night. Woody was joined by Kate on a few of the older numbers that they like to sing together, and there was a spontaneous appearance by singer Katrianne Lissauer in a wonderful duet version of John Barleycorn.

This venue is worth keeping in mind for a good mid-week musical experience.

They played the opening performance for Thunderbridge Bluegrass Boys, who were in top form. This is the fourth year that Tacchi-Morris have hosted a Bluegrass night, and Thunderbridge are regulars at this event. Their energy is infectious and their singing superb. Very dynamic and entertaining.

Buffalo Gals is presently on a break from all performances, and will be until the beginning of 2011. Anyone interested in booking them is very welcome to get in touch now for 2011 events.

BUT, we have been recording our third album, and have just returned from a week-long retreat at La Fuente de Musica in Andalucia, where we had spirited away the fabulously talented Josh Clark of Get Real Records to engineer the project. We hope to release it by the end of this year.

Johnny, Pete and I are currently back at La Fuente de Musica, (El Fonte, Sorbas) to host the residential workshop holiday with Beverly Smith and Carl Jones. These events occur twice yearly at present. In late September and in early May. We have many return campers, and welcome new participants all the time too. At this upcoming camp, we have 7 returning and 7 newcomers, a good blend. All will be friends by the end of the week.
